At Marshall, Gerstein & Borun LLP, Ryan N. Phelan works with clients ranging from startups to Fortune 500 companies to protect innovation, build strategic patent portfolios, and navigate IP disputes. His practice spans patent prosecution, opinions, post-grant proceedings, and litigation, with particular depth in AI and machine learning, software, quantum computing, fintech, robotics, digital healthcare, and medtech.
With a background in computer engineering and science, experience as an Accenture technology consultant and software developer, and an MBA from Northwestern’s Kellogg School of Management, Ryan brings both technical depth and commercial judgment to patent strategy. He is an adjunct professor at Northwestern University Pritzker School of Law, where he teaches Patenting Software Inventions with a focus on patent eligibility. He is also the moderator of PatentNext, which was recognized as a Mondaq Thought Leader for Intellectual Property.
Ryan is an early adopter of AI in patent practice, where he keeps two principles at the center. First, attorney judgment: every AI-generated output is reviewed for accuracy and fit with the client’s invention and strategy. Second, client confidentiality: he prioritizes safeguards and demands the highest level of security.
“AI is changing how patent work gets done, but it only delivers real value when it’s built around how attorneys actually practice, with attorney judgment and client confidentiality at the center. Solve has been a true partner in bringing AI into our drafting and prosecution workflows, and I’m excited to help shape where these tools go next, from skills to fully agentic workflows.”
Ryan N. Phelan, Partner, Marshall Gerstein
“We are thrilled to have Ryan join Solve’s Customer Advisory Board. Ryan is one of the most sophisticated users of AI in patent practice that we work with. He builds his own custom workflows, leads internal training, and is constantly pushing for what comes next. His perspective on agentic workflows and responsible AI adoption inside a law firm will be invaluable as we build the next generation of Solve.”
David Joo, Founding Member of Partnerships at Solve Intelligence
We look forward to Ryan’s contributions to Solve Intelligence’s strategy and future product roadmap.
